Outdoor Cables Frequently Asked Questions

+ How are ScaleFibre outdoor cables protected against moisture?
Our cables employ a multi-layer moisture defense system. Inside the tubes, StaticGEL™ technology provides a clean, low-viscosity water-blocking compound that protects the fibers while ensuring mess-free handling for technicians. The cable core interstices are protected by a dry-core system utilizing water-swellable tapes and yarns; these materials expand instantly upon contact with water to block longitudinal migration, ensuring the network remains secure even if the outer jacket is compromised. Some cables, like our SmartRIBBON™, are completely dry, using proprietary water blocking techniques that involve no gel.
+ What options are available for protection against termites and ants?
For regions with high insect activity, we offer an optional Nylon (NY) jacket on some products. This hard, smooth outer layer provides a chemical and physical barrier that prevents termites and insects from being able to grip or bite through the cable’s protective layers.
+ How do you protect buried cables from rodent damage?
For high rodent risk environments, our Non-Metallic Armoured cables are available. Unlike some cables that use soft glass yarn, ScaleFibre utilizes solid FRP (Fiber Reinforced Plastic) rod armour. These rigid rods provide a far greater physical barrier against rodent gnawing and offer superior crush resistance. For environments where both rodents and termites are a threat, we offer these armoured cables with an additional Nylon jacket to provide total protection without the grounding requirements of metallic armor.
+ What are the benefits of using SmartRIBBON™ compared to traditional loose tube cables?
SmartRIBBON™ offers several critical advantages for large-scale deployments. Its intermittently bonded ribbon technology makes the cable significantly smaller and lighter, allowing for easier pulling or blowing over much longer lengths. The construction is completely dry, making it faster and cleaner to prepare than gel-filled alternatives. Most importantly, it supports mass fusion splicing of 12 fibers at once rather than single-fiber splicing, drastically reducing labor time while offering much higher fiber counts in the same footprint, making it the ideal choice for high-capacity duct networks.
+ Which cable should be used for overhead or pole-to-pole installations?
Our SkySPAN™ Aerial Cables are specifically designed for this purpose. They are All-Dielectric Self-Supporting (ADSS), meaning they contain no metal and require no messenger wire for support. They are engineered to handle the mechanical tension of long, medium, or short spans while resisting wind and ice loading.
+ What makes the High Strength series different from standard loose tube cables?
The High Strength series is engineered for critical infrastructure, offering approximately three times the tensile strength of a standard loose tube cable. This significantly higher load rating makes it ideal for challenging installations where high pulling tension or ground movement is expected. For routes requiring both extreme durability and pest resistance, we also offer this High Strength cable with an integrated Nylon jacket, providing a smooth, hard barrier against termites and ants in harsh environmental conditions.
+ What if my deployment requires even greater strength than the High Strength series?
For deployments requiring the highest possible mechanical resilience, we offer the High Strength Non-Metallic Armoured series. This range provides over 10 times the tensile strength of traditional loose tube cables. Our standard High Strength Armoured cable is engineered for extreme ground movement and rodent resistance, while the Nylon-jacketed High Strength Armoured version adds a critical barrier against termites and ants, representing our ultimate ‘all-threat’ solution for critical infrastructure.
+ What if my deployment requires both extreme tensile strength and protection from rodents?
For the most demanding environments where ground movement and rodents are both significant threats, our High Strength Non-Metallic Armoured cable series provides an option. This range combines our high strength cables with rigid FRP rod armour for maximum tensile and crush resistance, with over 10 times the tensile strength of traditional loose tube. This cable is also available in a Nylon-jacketed High Strength Armoured version providing a physical barrier against termite and ant attack, providing the ultimate ‘all-threat’ solution for critical infrastructure.
+ What is the best solution for last-mile FTTH drop connections?
For residential or business connections, our EasyDROP™ product provides a solution. This compact, gel-free flat drop cable features a 900µm buffered core that is field-terminatable. It is versatile enough for aerial, duct, or direct buried installs, allowing for a seamless transition from the distribution point to the premises.
+ Can your outdoor cables be used for indoor building entries?
While standard outdoor PE-jacketed cables are generally restricted to the first few meters of a building entry due to fire codes, we offer indoor/outdoor rated versions of many products, including SmartRIBBON™. These feature flame-retardant properties that allow them to be run directly to the server room or telco closet, eliminating the need for a transition splice at the building entry.
